Blog #1: My Musical Culture

Hey ya’ll, my name is Emorie Thrasher. Welcome to my musical blog where I will be connecting music through my life and all around me. At a young age, at about 9 years old, I started to really get into music and the beautiful complexity of the instruments that made sounds to compose music. Most of my family members were either playing an instrument, signing, or dancing, while I was off playing sports. As I was approaching the age of 10, I was introduced to the cello, and from there my life changed.

When middle school came around, I auditioned for School of the Arts in Charleston, South Carolina. I had been playing for about a year and understood very little of my instrument. I had minimal experience with music, and tried very hard to understand all types of instruments. Eventually over time, and practice, I grew with my cello and the music I was playing. After about 9th Grade, I switched schools and stopped playing the cello. I regret that I stopped playing, but it was then that I realized music was an important part of my life.

Before we get started on how I feel towards music, I wanted to say that I listen to all genres of music because it is all beautiful, however there are some genres that I like less than others. I hope that I can help ya’ll see how music has influenced my life, and how important it has become to me!

1. Music is one of the things in this world that I seem to connect to emotionally and mentally. Some examples of music that I personally connect to are hard rock and alternative rock. The bands that I mostly listen to with this type of genre include but are not limited to “3 Days Grace,” “3 Doors Down,” “AC DC,” “Nirvana,” and “Avenged Sevenfold.” I’ve listened to these bands for years, I was brought up to these genres through my brother and my father. Like I said before in my introduction, I listen to all genres of music, but alternative and hard rock are by far my absolute favorite. I know that I tend to return to certain songs from these bands because I like that I can let my aggression and emotions out through the lyrics and the intensity of the sounds being played. I also like the edginess to the songs and the strong raspy voices from the singers. Below is a song that I listen to often, it’s not supposed to be lovely but this song makes me happy.

2. Within the past 5 months of pure torture, I reached out to music (and movies of course) to keep me busy, as well as entertained. I started listening to the artist, Ed Sheeran and the band, “Falling in Reverse” (two total opposites, I know). I really want to focus on Ed Sheeran and his beautiful, melodic soft sounds. His songs got me through quarantine and the rough times I was experiencing. I normally listen to more hard core music types, but he spoke to me and I became more comfortable with his music. I would usually lock myself in my room, sit on my bed and listen to music until I felt ready to talk to people but with his music, I felt more energetic and relaxed. Because of him, I started to talk to more people and make more friends. I never expected myself to fall in love with his music, but his words and his voice connect to experiences that every teen, and young adult experience. His songs talk about breakups, beauty, dark days, and romance. The way Ed Sheeran expressed himself in his songs, made it easier for me to attach myself to his music.

3. After giving some examples of artists and songs, it has come to my attention that there are very few genres/ artists  that I do not like as much. One artist that I can truly say that I don’t understand is 6ix9ine. I have never connected to his music in any way, but I don’t HATE any type of music because all music is unique, even if we don't understand it. I don’t feel moved by his lyrics, or his voice. I think his voice is absolutely terrifying and harsh. The words he uses to compose his songs are dirty and disgusting. In my opinion I think that he just throws words into his music to boost his ego and to become famous. It's all about popularity to him, and not in a good way. I cannot simply connect his songs to my feelings or to my life. He creeps me out, and his songs irritate the living heck out of me. Although I know that others listen to his music and actually enjoy it, I can’t seem to understand his music. Below I attached a link because I feel that this (or any of his songs) is not appropriate and you can listen to it on your own terms.

  1. You couldn't have said it any better about 6ix9ine! I totally agree with everything you mentioned. I also think that he just throws words in to boost himself and just to say that he actually "created" some good "music" (when it is actually very bad).

  2. I connect with the same kind of music honestly. I had a mom that liked alt rock and a dad that liked hard rock so after listening to them so much, they just grew on me. You’re right, it’s not meant to be lovely, but it’s nice to rock out to. I love the song you posted by the way!

  4. Hey Schoolmate lol, I wanted to touch upon regretting to drop your instrument, I too feel a little regret but in a weird way it's a relief not to have such pressure on my back you now? also I recently discovered Ed Sheeran and his voice is so soothing, definitely calms me down when I take a listen to him.

  5. I love all of the bands you mentioned! I also tend to lean towards rock music because it provides an outlet for me to get out my emotions like you mentioned. I grew up listening to rock music and my dad introduced me to some pretty heavy stuff when I was younger. I still connect with it even if it doesn't sound lovely and it's great music to run to!

  7. Okay, first off, I just want to say that you're definitely someone that I would trust with the AUX cord. I think it's so cool that you used to play the cello, I remember wanting to but my mom making me learn to play the violin instead. Reading through your blog, especially your music preferences and their impacts on your life brought back so many memories! I don't like 6ix9ine or his music either.

  8. I relate with these bands mostly ones like "Nirvana" or (you didn't mention this one but) "pearl Jam" is so good. I grew up listening to music like this with my dad, he has consistently been in bands since I was a child and before and always going to festival and concerts with him. This first song remind me of something that I would listening to while I was with him.
