Gender and Music

Image
Hello everyone!  I hope all is going well. I am beyond excited for the weekend, but before the weekend begins I wanted to discuss music and gender.  I wanted to start off with my thoughts on the societal images and preferences within music and gender. I, for one, do not believe in separating gender based off of music genres or types. I believe that anyone can listen to ANYTHING and enjoy it because their soul and ears enjoy it, not because they are expected to listen to a certain type of music based on their gender identity. The sound of an instrument, voices, and dances are all ways that express emotions. Music is what sets the mood, what makes people able to connect emotionally when they cannot verbally or physically do so in person. SO with that in mind, let's read on to the main part of my blog.  As a young girl, I was always interested in what the boys were doing, I wanted to be a part of their group and to connect with them. One way that I could connect with ...

Music From South America

Hello everyone,  I hope y’all are doing well. Before I get started on my blog about music in the Andes, specifically Bolivia, I wanted to share some background information about their style of music, and culture. Within my blog, I am incorporating the topic on Afro-Bolivians and I am going to talk about how music is their way of expressing themselves. So, here we go. Bolivia, like most of the countries surrounding it, is overpowered by Spain. Even after the independence, the music that was performed in Bolivia was from European descent, but around 1952, there were nationalistic reforms that encouraged the cultural and political awareness of the Aymara and Quechua. Natives of Bolivia started wearing ponchos and started associating themselves with native cultures. From there, Bolivians started to get into folklore, and eventually over time the folk music gained popularity throughout the country.  After my blog, if you have any questions, or did not quite understand what I am wri...

Music and Religion

Before I get started on my blog, I wanted to give y’all some background of how music in religion pertains to me. When I was younger, my family went to church every Sunday, and every holiday. Church was the one place that we could be together as a family, and be relaxed while praising the Lord. I used to go to Christian camps to learn more about the Bible, and Jesus and I used to attend youth groups so that I could meet new people.  As I got older, I started going less and less to church because of how busy I was. As you read through my blog, I’m not just addressing how the music pertains to me in my religious background but also how music pertains to religion through the use and aesthetics .  I grew up in an Episcopal church with the same people for years, so I knew everyone around me. As a little girl, I remember learning the basic hymns and songs from church, and at night before my siblings and I went to bed, my mom would sing “Jesus Loves Me.” This hymn stuck with me throu...

The Beauty of Native American Culture

Image
Hello! I hope that everyone is doing well. Below you are a couple questions that I had about the Native American Culture and their relation to music. Although these questions are not directly about the music, there are ways that they correlate to their music. I hope you enjoy, and if there are any questions, please feel free to comment below. I had a fun time learning about this, and I hope you do too.  Native American Powwow Attire:  Everything that Native Americans wear in powwows are significant in some way, even the beads and the feathers. I wanted to dig deeper into why Native Americans wear items on their clothes, and why the bright colors on their costumes? My curiosity led me to looking up “Powwow Costumes and their Meaning,” and to find the meaning behind them. The website, See California , provides that there are multiple costumes such as the ladies cloth dress, ladies jingle dress, men grass dance, etc. Right now I am solely focusing on the Ladies Jingle Dress...
